Bhitarkanika is a unique natural habitat that makes every tourist fall in love with the place. The unique combination of mangrove forests along with varied flora and fauna including salt tolerant species of trees gives Bhitarkanika an important position on Orissa tourism map. This picturesque sanctuary is a rich and lush green eco-system lying in the estuarine region of North-Eastern corner of Kendrapara district of Orissa.

Bhitarkanika area houses 672 kms of mangrove forest and wetland that is home to over 215 species of birds including winter migrants from Central Asia and Europe. Another important feature that makes this place an important tourist attraction is that this sanctuary is home to the largest population of giant salt water crocodile in India. Other wildlife attractions for travellers coming to Bhitarkanika are King Cobra, reptiles, turtles, Monitor Lizard, Indian Python, Leopard, Wild Cat, Wild Boar, Hyena, Sambar and numerous migratory birds like Asian Open Bill, Cormorants, Darters, and Black Ibis. 

Bhitarkanika is nature's paradise with its picturesque greenery in the estuary of Mahanadi river system and Bay of Bengal. This popular travel destination comprises of three unique biodiversity regions - Bhitarkanika national park, Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary and Gahirmatha marine sanctuary.
