About Coorg - Karnataka Tourism

Coorg (1525 m above sea level), meaning dense forest on steep hill, is 252 kms from Bangalore on the Western ghats. Coorg is said to be Scotland of India, providing tourists view to misty hills, lush forests, coffee plantation, orange groves and breathtaking views. This place is a beautiful hill station that is very popular among travellers from South India, set amidst verdant valley, surrounded by teakwood forests. The river Cauvery originates also originates here at Talacauvery.

Coorg, also known as kodagu, is the biggest producer of coffee in the state of Karnataka. Madikeri is the district headquarters that has an old world charm with its British heritage.  Coorg is actually a district of Karnataka, with its major city being Madikeri. The best way for travellers to reach here is using a bus or cab, as road is the only way to access this beautiful valley. The head-quarter of Coorg, Madikeri is located at a distance of 120 km from Mysore and 260 km from Bangalore. 

The main tourist attraction of Madikeri is the Raja's seat, which provides picturesque view of the green hills and valleys of Coorg. Coorg is also home to Talacauvery, which is located 44 km from Madikeri, and is the place from where River Cauvery originates. Talacauvery is a major pilgrimage centre in the region that is frequented by thousands of travellers. Another important tourist attraction  is Rajiv Gandhi national park (Nagarhole) that is about a three hour ride from Madikeri. This splendid district also has some very beautiful water falls including Iruppu falls and Abbey falls that become real picturesque during the rainy season. 

Coorg is a perfect destination for travellers who want to have relaxing time in the arms of nature. Many tourists love to spend time just relaxing in a nature resort or take a walk through the coffee plantations or take a long drive through the green hills. This place is also perfect for trekkers with some great treks in the region. Options are also available for organized treks to three major peaks here - Tadiandamol, Pushpagiri, and Brahmagiri. There are also organizations in Coorg that organize adventure activites in the region including camping, trekking, river rafting, rock climbing and aero sports.
