Formerly known as Ajaya-meru, Ajmer was found in the late 7th century by Dushyant Chauhan by establishing the Chauhan dynasty. Till the 12th Century, this city remained the main center of the Chauhan dynasty. Thereafter, Ajmer was conquered by Muhammad Ghauri, founder of the Delhi Sultanate, in 1193. Afterwards, Ajmer served as the abode of the Mughal emperors also. In 18th century it continued to be in the hands of the Marathas. Since then Ajmer has enjoyed stable governance.
