About Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar is the capital of Odisha (Orissa), and is also known as ‘City of Temples’. The modern city of Bhubaneswar was designed by the German architect Otto Konigsberger in 1946 and is one of the first planned cities of independent India like Chandigarh and Jamshedpur. Bhubaneswar is one of the cleanest and greenest cities of India. The city is the largest in Orissa and is a part of the twin cities Bhubaneswar-Cuttack that together constitute center of religious and economic importance. 

Bhubaneswar city has a 3000 years old history which is boasted by marvelous architecture of the temples of the city. The large number of temples (around 600) in Bhubaneswar, depict the entire span of Kalinga architecture. Bhubaneswar is a part of the Golden Triangle circuit, the other two being Puri and Konark and is a part of various tour packages that cover the three.

History of Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar city has a long history that dates back to 2000 years starting from the Chhedi dynasty. Bhubaneswar has been known by many names in history including Toshali, Kalinga Nagari, and Ekamra Kanan. The well known Kalinga war that resulted in Ashoka preaching Buddhism worldwide took place in Dhauli that lies in the Southern part of Bhubaneswar district. 

There are numerous examples of the great history of Bhubaneswar including the inscriptions on Khandagiri-Udayagiri caves and the innumerable temples in and near Bhubaneswar. The temples in Bhubaneswar were built from 8th to 12th century under the rule of various kings of Kalinga empire.
