Bihar holds a special place in India’s history being the place where major Indian empires rose and fell. Bihar is home to world’s earliest university and numerous monasteries and religious shrines. One of the major attraction of Bihar tourism is the Buddhist circuit that is the linked to Buddha’s pilgrimage trail.
The starting point of Buddhist trail is Patna with the museum of Buddhist sculptures and the terracotta urn that contains ashes of Lord Buddha. Vaishali attracts tourists for the ruins of location where second Buddhist council took place. Nalanda attracts tourists to experience the grandeur of world’s first University where Lord Buddha taught once and Hieun Tsang, the 7th century Chinese traveler was a student. Rajgir, the ‘royal palace’, was the venue for 1st Buddhist council and Lord Buddha spent five years after having attained enlightenment. The hill of Gridhrakuta in Rajgir is where the Buddha delivered most of his sermons. Bodhgaya is the spot where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment, with the Mahabodhi Temple marking the precise location.
