About Karwar

Karwar is an amazing unexplored beach surrounded by Arabian Sea on one side and the Western Ghats on the other. The picturesque town with hills and valleys covered with dense tropical jungle is complemented by glorious weather. The town of Karwar is situated 12 kms south of Goa-Karnataka border on the bank of river Kali.

The tranquil ambience of the place had inspired the famed poet, Rabindranath Tagore to pen his first play here. There is a yearly festival known as 'Karavali Festival' held on the Tagore beach which is visited by tourists from Karnataka and neighboring Goa state.

Karwar is also an important Naval base for the Indian navy. Multiple beaches of Karwar including Casurina beach and Arga beach are out of bound of general public.

Karwar History

Karwar was once an important trade centre and is still known for its fine muslin. During the 18th century, this city was a part of the Maratha Empire and became a British territory after the defeat of the Marathas in the third Anglo-Maratha War. Karwar was also a settlement of the Portuguese.
