History of Lucknow
Lucknow, the city of Nawabs, has a glorious history. People say that the original name of the city of Lucknow was Lakshmanpur or Lakhanpur. According to popular legend, it was supposed to be gifted by King Ramchandra, the main hero of Suryavanshi Dynasty of Ayodhya, to his brother Lakshman after conquering Lanka and Lakshman laid the foundation of the ancient city. Historical evidences show that after 1350 AD the city of Lucknow, then known as Avadh, came under the reign of the Delhi Sultanate, the Nawabs of that region and the Mughals. The people of Lucknow actively participated in the freedom movement along with Mahatma Gandhi and Maulana Mohammad Ali. After independence, the city of Lucknow has been declared as the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh by the Government of India. Since then it has progressed steadily.
