History of Mathura
Mathura has an ancient history. According to the mythological belief, Mathura or Brajbhoomi is famous as a birthplace of Lord Krishna. Vasudeva, father of Lord Krishna, had carried Krishna, the 8th child of Devaki, to Vrindavan or Mathura to save him from being killed by Kansa, brother of Devaki. According to the Archeological Survey of India, the city is mentioned in the oldest Indian epic, the ‘Ramayana’. Earlier the place came to be known as Madhuvan as it was thickly wooded, then Madhupura and later Mathura. This is of the belief that the city might also have got its name from a famous Yadav king Madhu who reigned around 1,600 BC. History of Mathura has undergone different phases, and has seen the fall and rise of many empires.
