About Nalanda

Nalanda, world’s oldest University, was founded in 5th century AD. Today tourists visit the place to relive the experience among the ruins of the ancient center of learning. This was the first residential University of the world with around 2000 teachers and 10000 students. Lord Buddha also visited the University multiple times during his lifetime. Detailed description of the architecture and excellence of education system can be found in the vivid account given by Chinese traveller Hieun Tsang who stayed here in 7th century AD. The University also had numerous monasteries and viharas built by kings like Ashoka and Harshvardhana.
