About Pathankot

Located in Northern region of India and the East side of Pakistan, Pathankot, a small city of Gurdaspur district in the state of Punjab, was part of the princely state of Nurpur (now in Himachal Pradesh). Spread over an area of 22.10 sq. km, Pathankot is the gateway that connects the state of Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of the country. Being a meeting point of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir states, Pathankot serves as a travel hub for the three northerly states. Famous for its shawl & Loi weaving industry, Pathankot is the fifth largest city (in terms of population) of the state of Punjab. Apart from being the largest military base not only of India but whole of Asia, the city is also known for its picturesque surroundings and pleasant atmosphere and impresses both domestic and global tourists. Pathankot is bordered by the foothills of Himachal Pradesh, Kangra and Dalhousie from its south and east boundaries, and by the snow capped Himalayas from its north side. Due to its ideal location, the city is often used as a rest-stop before heading into the mountains of Jammu and Kashmir, Dalhousie, Chamba, and Kangra, deep into the Himalayas. Situated at the foot of hills and near the head of Bari Doab canal, it is one of the fertile regions of the state of Punjab which is supported by Ravi and Chakki rivers. This city is famous for Litchis; apples are also available in its season.

History of Pathankot

Pathankot has a rich historical past. It was under the reign of many rulers from time to time. During 17 th century, Pathankot was ruled upon by Rajput rulers. History says that the city was part of the princely state of Nurpur (now in Himachal Pradesh) which was established by Jatpal alias Rana Bhet, a Taur Rajput from Delhi. Jatpal settled at Pathankot and took possession of all the country in the Foot of the hills and shifted his capital to the modern town of Nurpur towards the end of 17th century.
