About Similipal
Similipal covering an area of 2750 sq.km is situated in the Mayurbhanj district of Orissa. Similipal derives its name from the magnificent Simul which means silk cotton tree. Similipal has numerous peaks and valleys in the region with various streams flowing through the region and ultimately draining into Bay of Bengal. The Similipal Tiger reserve was created in the year 1973 and then the government of Orissa declared the Similipal sanctuary within an area of 2200 sq.km in 1979. Later the government also proposed the Similipal National Park in the year 1980 with an area of 845 sq. km.
