About Srirangapatna

Srirangapatna is a historic city 13 kms from Mysore with huge cultural, religious and historic heritage. Srirangapatna looking like an island surrounded by Cauvery river - was the capital of the warrior kings Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan – The tiger of Mysore.

Srirangapatna History

Srirangapattana became the seat of viceroyalty, during the time of Vijaynagar Empire. Raja Wodeyar vanquished Rangarya, the then Viceroy of Srirangapatna, during the decline of the Vijayanagar empire, and took over the rule of Mysore state. The Fort of Srirangapatna had huge importance as it signified sovereignty over the kingdom of Mysore, due to its closeness to the capital city of Mysore, as it was the last bastion and defence of the kingdom in case of invasion.

Under the rule of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, Srirangapatna became the capital and flourished as the cosmopolitan city of this powerful state. The final battle of 1979 between Tipu Sultan's forces and the combined forces of Nizam of Hyderabad and British, took place in Srirangapatna and Tipu Sultan died in the battle.
