History of Varanasi

According to legend, the city of Varanasi was founded by the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva. The city of Varanasi is believed to be standing on the tip of "Trishool", and is considered to be one of the seven holiest cities in India. There are mention about Varanasi in various religious text including Rigveda, Skanda Purana, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Varanasi was the capital of kingdom of Kashi in the eighteenth century and remain an important commercial center in India.
