Visakhapatnam History

According to puranas, Visakhapatnam was ruled by King Visakha Varma during BC's and was named after him. According old texts, the region of Visakhapatnam was part of the Kalinga kingdom that lost to king Ashoka in the bloodiest battle that resulted in king Ashoka to embrace Buddhism. The territory of Visakhapatnam was then ruled by the Chalukyas, Pallavas, and then by the Nizams of Hyderabad.

About Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is a major city of Andhra Pradesh known for its beaches, hill ranges and valleys. Primarily an industrial city, the city got its name after the god Vaishaka. Visakhapatnam has the largest ship building yard in the country with major port and cargo activities. The city of Visakhapatnam gives a nice treat to the tourists in terms of beautiful beaches amongst the low ranges of hills, lush green parks, cave formations, and cultural and heritage tourism.

Visakhapatnam is surrounded by three amazing hills, with the shrines of three different religions on the three hills. There is Venkateswara temple on the Sri Venkateswara Konda hill, Church of the Virgin Mary on Ross hill and the tomb of a Muslim saint, Baba Ishaq Madina Dargah on Dargah Konda hill.
