Sambalpur, located in the Western Zone of state of Orissa, is popular among tourists for its lush green forests, colorful wild life, gushing waterfalls, and rich tribal life. The city is known among travelers for its handloom textile work which has gained international reputation. The unique pattern and design of the textiles are named under the brand of Sambalpuri. Tourists visiting Sambalpur must try out the Sambalpuri Sarees that are liked all over India. 

This historical city is full of natural scenery located on the banks of River Mahanadi. The city has history dating back to 2nd century BC and is a known trade and commerce center in history. One of the most popular tourist attraction around Sambalpur is the Hirakud Dam, located 15 km from the city, and is the longest dam in world. The reservoir made by the dam is said to be the largest manmade lake in Asia. Sambalpur is also known among travelers for the Huma temple, which is a Shiva temple with a leaning dome. Another must visit place near the city is Ghanteshwari temple, which is known for the thousand bells hanging here. Wildlife lovers would also like Ushakothi, which is a beautiful wildlife sanctuary full of flora and fauna, located at a distance of 43 kms from the city. 

The city administration celebrates the Sambalpur Lok Mahotsav every year to showcase the unique culture and traditions of the region. There are various dance and music performances organized during the festival along with local art and handicraft kept on display. Another important event organized in the city is the Sitalsasthi carnival, which celebrates the marriage between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
