Thekkady, located about 190 km from Cochin, is a beautiful travel destination full of natural treat. Travelers visit Thekkady to get out of the hectic work life and relax amongst its coffee and tea plantations, lush green forests and lake/reservoirs. This unique forest destination is a green paradise full of attractive wildlife animals and birds, along with coffee, tea and pepper plantations.

This natural habitat provides an unforgettable experience to visitors with option to see wildlife from a close range. Some of the popular wildlife attractions here are wild elephants, sambars, tigers, gaurs, and Nilgiri langurs. Thekkady is also home to a wide variety of birds with some of the popular one being the Malabar grey hornbill, the Indian pied hornbill, and Whitebellied Treepie.

The main tourist attraction here is the Periyar wildlife sanctuary, which is spread across in an area of 777 sq. km. around the beautiful Periyar Lake. The Periyar Lake is a beautiful artificial lake that was formed after the construction of Mullaperiyar dam. The most photogenic view for tourists in Thekkady is when the herds of wild Indian elephants come to Periyar Lake to play in water.

There is also an option of taking a cruise ride in Periyar Lake and to view the flora and fauna surrounding the lake. There are also options for travelers to enjoy adventure tourism by doing trekking, rafting and camping. It is recommended for travelers to go on the designated treks along with the guides provided by forest department. The forest department also organizes elephant safaris here.

One of the important trekking points here is Kurisumala, which is at a height and provides a panoramic view of the surrounding areas. Tourists interested in visiting the tea and spice plantations can visit the nearby areas of Kumily, Murrikady, and Vandanmedu.

Thekkady is easily accessible from major cities of Kerala and Karnataka, with bus services from Madurai, Bangalore, Kottayam, Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram.
