History of Udaipur - Rajasthan Tourism

Udaipur was founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, as the site of his residence. In 1568, when the Mughal emperor Akbar captured the fort of Chittor, Udai Singh moved the capital to the site of his residence, which became the first capital of the Mewar kingdom. As the Mughal empire weakened, the Sisodia ranas, and later maharanas recaptured most of Mewar except for Chittor.

Udaipur, the jewel of Mewar, remained the capital of the state ruled by the Sisodia dynasty for 1200 years. In 1818, it became a princely state of British India. After India's independence in 1947, Government of India took over the charge of Mewar from Maharana Bhupal Singh, the King of Udaipur, and Mewar became Rajasthan.
