Uttar Pradesh, a heavily populated state of India, lies in the northern part of the country. Uttar Pradesh has an area larger than that of Britain and only 5 countries (including India) host larger populations than Uttar Pradesh.
The river Ganges that originates in Uttrakhand and flows through Uttar Pradesh defines Uttar Pradesh's religious and cultural landscape, sacred in itself and nurturing some of the holiest Hindu sites like Varanasi and Allahabad. Yamuna is the other sacred river in Uttar Pradesh that flows through the holy city of Mathura. Uttar Pradesh region has high religious importance as it is the birthplace of Hindu gods Ram (Ayodhya) and Krishna (Mathura) and the place where Buddha preached his first sermon (Sarnath).

Agra is the most-visited city in Uttar Pradesh, famous for the marvelous Mughal monuments (Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri) dating from the 16th-17th centuries. On the eastern edge of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi and Ayodhya are important Hindu sites famous for the riverside temples and old palaces alongside the west bank of the River Ganga. Allahabad plays host to the Kumbh Mela every 12 years, attracting millions of pilgrims to Uttar Pradesh and is named as the largest religious gathering in the world. To add to jewels of Uttar Pradesh  is another stunning city, Lucknow, steeped in with the refined and elegant Nawabi culture.
